The principle works in reverse for behaviors you want to reduce. Just as lowering activation energy makes good behaviors more likely, raising it makes bad behaviors less likely. Adding friction to distractions and bad habits — logging out of apps, removing them from your phone, keeping temptations out of reach — increases the effort required to engage in them, which reduces how often you do. You are deliberately making the unwanted behavior harder to start, exploiting the same concentration of difficulty at the threshold.

The deeper insight behind activation energy is that motivation often follows action rather than preceding it. We tend to believe we need to feel motivated before we start, but frequently the opposite is true: starting generates the motivation.
